My birthday this year coincided with Deepavali, which was great because it meant loooong weekend holiday ahead. Knowing this 3 months back already, I made Peter close his clinic for 2 days and off we went for our weekend getaway cum Mama birthday celebration. Earlier this year, I stumbled across someone's blog talking about this place - Berembun Forest Reserve. Located just 45 minutes drive from KL, this place was the perfect getaway simply because you get to experience nature minus the usual 4-hour drive! Paul (a friend of ours) and his family (wife & 3 yo boy) joined us. They were equally excited about the trip given they rarely go on holidays and this was just perfect for a short break.
This first half of the morning, we stopped by an Ostrich Farm. At RM8 for an adult and RM6 per child, we were given a private tour around the farm and Abraham (a senior staff here) gave us very in depth insights about ostriches, there was also an opportunity to ride the ostrich and they even showed us an ostrich race!
After a quick lunch in Kg. Pantai (almost in the middle of nowhere), we drove to The Shorea where we put up a night. The resort was really secluded, we got lost a couple of times locating it. Built within the forest reserve, the resort only has 4 villas, each accommodating from minimum 2 to maximum 8 pax per villa. Very quiet and serene, recommended if you want a short getaway, away from the hustle and bustle of city life. It was good exposure for the kids to bond with nature again, and they have very quickly forgotten what an Ipad is.

| Look Mama. I found an ostrich feather |
 |
| This ostrich is 3 years old |

Mr Abraham being pecked. He said ostriches are very gentle animals - just don't provoke them!
And their pecks aren't painful.. well, not for an adult at least. |
 |
| Picture time with the ostrich. Just as we thought it would be safe to stand closer... |
 |
As soon as I took another snap, the "gentle" animal pecked onto Mei Mei's hand. You can see her wailing there!
In the end, I found out that the ostrich pecked onto her hand because she was holding onto a piece of bread!
Haha. Poor girl |
 |
| Off to see more ostriches and goats |
 |
| This one is 5 years old |

| And that it was so strong, it's okay to stand on it |
 |
| Ta Daaaa! |

| Even Mama had a go |

 |
| One happy goat |

| Riding on an ostrich. They had to blindfold the ostrich so that they walk slowly. Otherwise they would go berserk |

| What large eggs these are |

Next stop was to check into The Shorea.
We stayed in Villa Kemboja which was right on top of the hill, facing another hill |
